Can Hydroquinone Treat Acne Discoloration?

Acne is troublesome enough let alone the discoloration that often appears following bad outbreaks. There are two common causes for this hyperpigmentation: the actual scarring that results as acne lesions heal, and an overproduction of melanin that stems from inflammation.

Unfortunately, both acne scars and the brown or dark pink spots produced by excess melanin can persist long after your acne has disappeared.

The Role of Hydroquinone for Acne Treatment

Hydroquinone is a chemical that is used to lighten patches of hyperpigmentation caused by melasma, freckles, age spots, and acne scars. For acne patients, it is typically used carefully and only for a short time.

Many patients notice results within two weeks of use, but this varies depending on the extent of your acne scarring and hyperpigmenation, as well as the concentration of hydroquinone you use.

Hydroquinone products can be obtained from a local plastic surgeon or dermatologist. Your doctor may recommend a product with lightening ingredients such as vitamin C, kojic acid, glycolic acid, or tretinoin. To obtain 4% hydroquinone, you will need a prescription.

Hydroquinone works by attacking melanosomes and reducing their production. The chemical also blocks the production of tyrosinase, an enzyme that is necessary in the production of melanin.

How to Use Hydroquinone for Acne

Hydroquinone is not intended for use on actual acne lesions, but the scars and patches of hyperpigmentaiton that result after the lesions have healed. Apply hypdroquinone cream to

flat scars only because raised scars are often still active pimples.

It can be a good idea to test the product on a small patch of skin, like your arm, that can easily be concealed. Watch out for swelling, crusting, itching, burning, and skin discoloration. If you are symptom-free within 24 hours of application, apply the product directly to the affected spots, taking care to avoid the eyes, mouth, and any other mucous membranes.

Apply hydroquinone to the same area every day, either once or twice daily, taking care to wash your hands thoroughly after each application. Otherwise, follow your physician’s hydroquinone instructions.

Do not use hydroquinone if you are pregnant or nursing. Ask your doctor about the possible side effects of hydroquinone or any other skin care product you are using.
