A recent study suggests that teens who resolve their acne issues may get a significant boost in self-esteem.
“The presence of acne has a significant impact on self-esteem and quality of life” for adolescents age 13 to 18, according to researchers who performed a qualitative review of 16 studies.
Although the review does not prove a causal relationship between acne blemishes and emotional problems, it does suggest that acne outbreaks in teenagers can affect more than simply their skin. “Acne has a huge impact on people’s lives,” said review co-author Dr. Steven R. Feldman, professor of dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
“It’s something worth treating,” he added, and not just because it can lead to permanent scarring. One study reviewed found that 9 percent of teens with acne showed signs of depression – rates three to four times higher than in the general population. Dr. Feldman advised those who suffer from acne to “go ahead and see your doctor to get it treated, a primary care doctor or a dermatologist, before there’s scarring or psychological issues.”
Part of successful acne treatment is choosing the right skin care product. Dermesse skin care products include a full line of products for preventing, reducing and managing acne breakouts.
The most popular acne solution offered by Dermesse is the Clarifying System, which is designed for the treatment of acne. Using the cleanser, toner, medicated pads and spot treatment (or drying lotion) is a systematic and effective approach to acne treatment.
